PEMF for Canine Overview
PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields. Put simply PEMF therapy is a form of magnetic therapy using ElectroMagnetic fields generated by copper coils.
Each cell in your body can be likened to a capacitor, or battery, which holds a charge. Your entire body is electrical and your cells each need a measurable electrical charge to function optimally. In order to maintain good wellness, cells must be doing their jobs. PEMF supports the body’s natural abilities to optimize balanced body functions – the definition of wellness.
There are already over 7000 clinical trials using PEMF therapy and although it has many applications it is most widely used for pain management and improving sleep and relaxation - research concluding that the risk of adverse effect arising is extremely low with very few contraindications.
How does it work?
An elecric current is passed through copper coils in the PEMF device. This generates the magnetic field that enters into the cells of the body, in turn causing the cells membranes to react, open and become more permeable, allowing nutrients to easily penetrate. This also allows and encourages the more efficient removal of cellular waste, restoring balance and optimal function in cells.
A PEMF device will often come with a mat to lie on and/or an applicator to place against a body part, from here the magnetic fields enter into the body, tissues and cells in need of treatment. Different physiologies and conditions will respond differently to varying levels of intensity, waveforms and frequencies.
Pulsed electromagnetic field is fast emerging as the innovative treatment for regulation of inflammation, which can have significant effects on tissue regeneration. Thus, PEMF treatment could provide a non medical means of modulating inflammation in injured tissues resulting in enhanced functional recovery.
Although research on precise mechanisms continues, three key effects have been identified:
1. Healing growth factor response through:
What are PEMF for Canine benefits?
One of the key beneficial effects of PEMF therapy is that it stimulates the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). ANS is the part of our brain and nervous system that is responsible for controlling many varied functions of the body and therefore our health. It controls our breathing, heart rate, sweating, digestion and all vital functions. If this system is impaired or not functioning properly, there will be major dysfunction in the body and can increase the risk of disease and speed the aging process. PEMFs activate and balance the ANS, which then supports these vital functions resulting in faster recovery for the whole body, naturally.
PEMF Therapy for Canine can be used across a diverse and wide range of ages and conditions:
Treatments can be a one off but a multi-visit treatment plan is highly reccomended for best and most successful, long lasting results.
General conditions may require 4-6 treatments, ideally adminstered over 3 weeks, two treatments a week, solely dependant on how the condition and patient responds. Going forward ideally repeated on a maintenance basis, for booster treatments, as required. PEMF Therapy is a stand-alone therapy but also complements Osteopathic, Therapeutic Sports Massage, Chiropractic or Hydrotherapy treatments. All treatments are by appointment only at a time most convenient for the patient in a friendly, professional clinic environment or the comfort of your own home. Please note, home visits may incur additional cost.

1. Healing growth factor response through:
- Regulation of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion, during different stages of the inflammatory response.
- Improved cell proliferation
- Changes in cell membrane permeability
- Increased endorphin and serotonin release
- Modulating the body's infammatory response.
- Enhanced functional recovery.
- Enhanced cell membrane permeability
- Modulating the inflammatory response, thus slowing the spread of infection
- improved circulation and modification of neuro-chemical imbalances
